Implementation of Balanced Literacy Instruction
How is balanced literacy instruction effectively implemented in our classroom?
It is implemented into our daily lessons, since it is not a static approach. In other words, it is a well rounded and fluid approach to teaching that is implemented throughout the day. A perfect example of this implementation is seen during our guided reading and literacy work stations, where students practice reading, writing, speaking, listening, word study and mastering mechanics.
For example, during guided reading, they may read about Harriet Tubman and practice finding who, what, where and when in the book, which is a skill I previously modeled and they learned during a mini-lesson. As a class, we create anchor charts that students reference throughout the day. They could also listen to an interactive read aloud about civil rights struggles and practice asking and answering critical questions. At the word study station, students may search for word patterns in a big book, which they previously read during shared reading. They could write a letter to Harriet Tubman in the writing station, and practice mastering mechanics of writing standard correspondence. Then, they may share that piece when we re-group after literacy stations, in order to practice fluency.
