Objective
Demonstrate proficiency in information literacy based on reading, writing, listening, speaking and research, by completing a research paper that contains a thesis, is persuasively articulated, well-structured, formally correct, and correctly documented and by validating your work and research orally with your peers, in print, and electronically.
Description |
Exhibit 5 is an informational research paper that I wrote for an assignment in ENG 4950, a capstone course, during the 2015 spring/summer term at Madonna University. The purpose of the assignment was to demonstrate my ability to research an issue related to my major. I wrote about the Sheltered Instruction Observable Protocol (SIOP) Model, an effective approach of instructing English learners. I chose this topic because it is related to my future profession as a teacher with EL students. The research paper needed to be in the MLA format with a minimum of five sources and had to be about six to eight pages long.

Reflective Analysis |
This Exhibit demonstrates my proficiency in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and research with respect to a contemporary issue in my major. For example, after conducting thorough research and attending a workshop, I wrote an informative piece about Sheltered Instruction Observable Protocol (SIOP) Model as an effective approach of instructing English learner (EL) students. The piece is structured well with an introduction, a background as to the need for effective instruction of ELs, a description of all of the components of the SIOP Model, and a conclusion. I shared my Exhibit with my classmates and explained that this topic is related to my future profession as a teacher with EL students (and possibly attaining a Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) Endorsement or Masters).
Not only does this Exhibit illustrate my proficiency in information literacy, but it also shows that I am proactive and passionate as to my education as a future teacher of EL students. For example, I took it upon myself to become knowledgeable as to a research-based instruction approach to effectively teach EL students. Previously, I had heard about the SIOP Model, but had not been trained and it was not offered in my pre-student teacher education courses. Therefore, I decided to attend the 3 day SIOP Model workshop in June 2015. Additionally, by choosing this topic for my research paper assignment, I learned more about the need for such differentiated instruction. Not only will all of this professional development and research help prepare me as a future teacher, but it will help me as I pursue a TESOL endorsement or masters. Moreover, given my knowledge of the SIOP Model instructional approach, I am confident that I will be more marketable in the education field. Who knows, I may end up becoming a SIOP Model trainer a few years from now. |
