Key Elements of
Balanced Literacy Instruction
The eight key elements of balanced literacy instruction are: modeled reading, modeled writing, shared reading, shared writing, guided reading, guided writing, independent reading and independent writing. These elements require a different level of teacher support and respect the students' levels of control or independence in reading and writing. As seen in this chart regarding reading, balanced literacy instruction follows the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model because it starts with high teacher support and goes to low teacher support. In other words, it begins with modeling (I) to shared and guided (WE) and ultimately to independent (YOU). This model is also used in the writing instruction approach.
