These elements encompass all modes of language arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening, word study and mastering mechanics. Furthermore, balanced literacy instruction combines language with rich literature and informational text associated with holistic reading and explicit instruction of skills. It is considered best practice in education because it is research-based. For a closer look at how I use balanced literacy instruction in our classroom, download the above chart.
What are the goals of balanced literacy instruction?
The goals are to cultivate the skills of reading, writing, thinking, speaking and listening in all students. Additionally, it promotes a love of language, a gaining of meaning from print, and facilitates instruction of phonics in context.
